10 steps to an easy DIY painting of doors and window frames
- Get your shave hook into action and use it to remove the old sealer near the frame. Also, scrape off all loose and flakey paint to prepare the surface for painting.
- Get your screwdriver and remove door handles, locks, doorknobs, hinges, or catches. If you don’t want to remove these parts, you can wrap them with masking tape. Just make sure you cover all these parts well before you proceed to step 3.
- Give your woodwork a thorough scrubbing with a degreasing product and sponge to clean dust, dirt, and grease. Let the surface dry well.
- Use sandpaper or a sanding sponge to sand the wood lightly – this helps to rough the window or door’s surface and prepare it for painting. Don’t forget to wipe down the wood after sanding to remove the dust.
- Mask off the edges where the glass joins the frame with masking tape using a putty knife to tuck the tape evenly close to the corners.
- The next thing you need to do is cover the wall next to the frame’s edges with masking tape to protect it from splashes and streaks.
- Apply the new sealer around the corners where the glass meets the frame. Use a sponge to smooth it out. Wait until the sealer is fully dry before proceeding to the next step.
- Now that you have finished prepping your window frame or door for painting is time for some real action! Apply one coat of the primer to the wood to provide the topcoats with a smooth surface to stick to. If you are painting doors, use a small brush to start with the detailed parts. After that, you can switch to a roller for the larger sections. Apply the product with upward strokes to prevent dripping.
- Once the primer has dried, paint the door or window frame with your chosen colour. Make sure to stir your paint well before applying it! In most cases, two coats of paint should be enough for an excellent result. However, suppose you are doing a significant colour change, for example, from burgundy to white. In that case, you may need to apply more coats. Always wait for the paint to dry thoroughly before applying the next coat. Consult the label on the can for information on drying time.
- Wait until the door or window is dry and carefully remove the masking tape. Clean any splashes of paint that have got onto the glass.
